Wirefly.com is selling its entire stock of AT&T handsets for free after instant discount with a new two-year contract. Note that the store doesn’t sell iPhones, though. You’ll have to go to Best Buy or directly to AT&T for those. The deal is good until midnight tonight and it’s for new AT&T customers. If you’re an existing AT&T customer due for an upgrade, most of the phones can still be had for free with a few exceptions—BlackBerry Bold 9700 is $50, BlackBerry 8820 is $60, HP iPAQ Glisten is $70—along with a few others. There are still some good freebies, though: BlackBerry Bold, BlackBerry Curve, HTC Pure, Nokia E71x, and plenty more. AT&T Cell Phones [Wirefly via PhoneNews ]

Nokia Siemens makes lots of mobile networking gear. Most of it provides the connectivity we use every day. But they also make and sell equipment to monitor that connectivity. Such devices are required in the U.S. and much of Europe for law enforcement purposes, and Nokia no doubt makes a pretty penny selling this monitoring equipment to various governments. New details have emerged recently that Nokia sold the same gear to Iran, where the government used it not for law enforcement purposes but to silence dissent. Big surprise! Nokia’s not alone in this practice of playing both sides of this issue: Cisco sells gobs of equipment to China for their Great Firewall; and plenty of other companies sell stuff to dictatorial regimes in the pursuit of profits. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, right? Ars Technica has a thorough story about the monitoring equipment, and Nokia’s claim that they did nothing wrong after the EU Parliament harshly reprimanded them.

BB has some great images from Nepal’s CAN InfoTech, a 17-year-old tech trade show. It had 238 stalls where folks were flogging amazing 8TB hard drives and the three year old Nokia N81. It’s absolutely laudable that these guys are doing what they’re doing. Outside of Western Europe, CE manufacturers tend to ignore the rest of the world, focusing on English-speaking countries to break all of their goodies. That Nepal is as dedicated to nerdity as we are is fun to see. Note that instead of bright lights the Sony booth actually used big dishes made of aluminum foil to focus light on the booth.
