Asus wants your network to look fabulous

You’ve been sitting there looking and looking at that horrible little while box that your assistant says is a “wireless rooter” and you are disgusted that this horrible thing has to even be in your house for the Internet let alone somewhere where you can see it. What do you do? You tell your assistant to go down to the Asus store or whatever and get you this beautiful new wireless rudder, the RT-N56U. Look at it, darling! It’s so beautiful! Yes! It’s so thin! Like Kate Moss before she got fat! Don’t worry yourself with the whys and hows. If you wanted something that looked like a box of crackers, you’d go buy a box of crackers. But you want the RT-N56U! It’s clothes! It’s fashion! It’s beautiful! Asus also released two more routers that look less like After 8 dinner mints, the ASUS RT-N13U and the AP-N13M, but who cares about those. via SlashGear

Netgear’s Universal Wi-Fi Internet adapter is a gift from the gods

&h=&q=90&w=90&h=65&zc=1" class="alignleft" alt="">

Today’s TVs, Blu-ray players, game consoles, and even AV receivers crave access to the Internet, but most will never get the pleasure of the ‘Net. Why? Because Mom and Pop don’t wanna run a CAT-5 cable through their house and power line adapters are about as reliable as two tin cans connected with string. But now there’s this: Netgear’s Universal Wi-Fi adapter. This device is a lot like power line adapters, which utilizes a device’s Ethernet port to send and receive bits and bytes sent over power lines. But the Universal Wi-Fi Internet Adapter uses Wi-Fi instead. This means that the adapter should work without drivers or installation on any device with an Ethernet port, being an AV receiver, Blu-ray player, or game system. It can also leek power off an USB port if there’s one available. It will be a tad pricey at $80 when it’s available in May, though. For that price Mom and Pop should be able to hire the neighborhood nerd to run a cable.

Orb releases a mini Speaker/Amp combo

Orb, a small company in New York, makes odd-looking speakers with some great sound. They just announced a small speaker/amp combo for $299 which includes two speakers and an optional subwoofer. The handmade speakers come in multiple finishes (I have the copper here at the house, which I personally don’t think go with my rug) but the dark ones look nice. The super eight subwoofer, a real monster, costs $299, while their larger model costs $598. I’ll have my review of these up soon – I’m having some set-up issues – but for the size they’re excellent.

Home-sized fuel cells are on the way

&h=&q=90&w=90&h=65&zc=1" class="alignleft" alt="">

If you thought solar panels were too expensive to put on your house, wait ’till you hear this one. Bloom Energy , a clean energy start-up in Silicon Valley, said “Hello world” yesterday, unveiling a rather revolutionary solid oxide fuel cell unit. If all goes to plan, it should be able to put your house completely off the grid. There’s a 60 Minutes spot after the jump. The project started way back in 2001, intended for colonizing Mars. Each unit is about the size of a parking space, and can provide upwards of 100kW of power. It has also proven to be much cheaper and more efficient than most other “clean energy” options. You can power it with nearly any fuel you can think of. Bio fuels, natural gas, etc. At $700K a unit, you probably won’t be seeing these things in your neighborhood for a while. Unless your neighborhood includes the campuses of some heavy-hitters like Google or eBay. But reports say that one of the main priorities for Bloom Energy is making these units affordable at a home-owner level. Click over there for a much more detailed explanation of the tech behind it.
