Record sales, down. Game sales, down. Video sales, down. VHS sales… up?

&h=&q=90&w=90&h=65&zc=1" class="alignleft" alt="">

I assumed that VHS tapes had gone the route of Polaroid film and were continuing to be phased out of existence. I must have been too hasty, because according to the Entertainment Retailer’s Association, videocassette sales in Britain have more than doubled in the past year. In the grand scheme of home entertainment , these numbers are hardly a drop in the bucket. Movies, PC games, and console titles are still moving millions of copies per title. VHS has jumped up 214% , except total sales still haven’t cracked 100K. But who’s still making all of these tapes? At least with other retro media formats such as vinyl and instant film, there are distinct advantages over today’s mediums. MP3s don’t have anywhere near the same fidelity or warmth, and modern cameras still can’t instantly print analog prints. But I don’t see anything VHS tapes can do that DVDs can’t do exponentially better. One interesting tidbit is that music sales aren’t as far down as you’d expect. 2009 only saw a 0.8% decline despite the loss of large chain stores such as Zavvi and Woolsworth. According to ERA director general Kim Bayley: “It’s too early to say whether this is the music market bottoming out” But some changes to the music delivery system may be responsible. The average price of an album has dropped below £8 for the first time, and smaller, independent retailers are surviving. Seems the US could take a leaf out of their book , perhaps?

Smallville can’t be allowed to break Stargate SG-1’s world record

&h=&q=90&w=90&h=65&zc=1" class="alignleft" alt="">

We MUST stop this. Somehow Smallville must be canceled before it surpasses Stargate SG-1 and becomes the longest running Sci-fi show in North America’s history. Now I’m not suggesting violence here. Oh no. That’s dumb. But maybe something like what Jericho fans did. They mailed in boxes and boxes and boxes of peanuts to get the show started again. Maybe if we send in cases of green Jell-O seeing as it Jack O’Neil’s favorite desert. I don’t know. Something needs to be done, though. Stargate SG-1 is the most complete and thorough sci-fi show every created. It ranks higher than both Star Trek and Star Wars in book. Watch the show from the very first NSFW episode through the end. There are complex story arcs and character development found in no other sci-fi show. Sure, there are trademark quirks about the show, but it’s the fact that the show is never too serious and always pokes fun at both itself and the genre in general that makes it so great. We can’t allow Smallville to surpass the ten year mark and therefore become the longest running sci-fi show. I’m sure there was a similar outcry when Stargate SG-1 passed X-Files nine season run thus setting the record, but trust me, X-Files has nothing on SG-1. I just finished watching the entire X-Files series start to finish and there can’t be another show with as weak of a series storyline than X-Files . Sure, some of the episodes were epic, but a lot were not. It took a lot to sit through seasons after the mystery about Mulder’s sister was solved and even more after David Duchonvy left the show. Smallville is a fine show. That’s clear otherwise it wouldn’t be contesting the record , but it’s not SG-1. Hopefully the ascended beings above will intervene and do something to stop Smallville from kicking SG-1 out of the record books.

New Iron Man 2 trailer is here (and it’s awesome)

&h=&q=90&w=90&h=65&zc=1" class="alignleft" alt="">

We’ve given you a first look at Iron Man 2 way back in June last year, and two months ago, we reported it will be Marvel’s first IMAX movie when it hits screens on May 7, 2010. It’s 2.32 minutes long and very, very cool. This is the official synopsis of the movie: Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster film based on the legendary Marvel Super Hero Iron Man, reuniting director Jon Favreau and Oscar® nominee Robert Downey Jr. In Iron Man 2, the world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James Rhodey Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces. Here’s the new trailer (Trailer on Apple.com in HD ) And to make things complete, here is the first official trailer (released in December last year):

New Prince of Persia trailer looks awesome

&h=&q=90&w=90&h=65&zc=1" class="alignleft" alt="">

In November last year, we’ve shown you not one but two trailers for the Prince of Persia movie , and both turned out to be quite decent. And this third full-length trailer (courtesy of IGN) for one of this summer’s blockbusters doesn’t look too shabby either. The movie’s full title is “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” and it’s scheduled for release (by Disney) in the USA on May 28. This is the official synopsis: A rogue prince (JAKE GYLLENHAAL) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (GEMMA ARTERTON) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.
