While the occupy Wall Street movement may have somewhat tapered off as of late, another kind of occupation is well and truly in progress and growing in strength rather alarmingly. Indeed, with Black Friday all but on the doorstep once again, campers in their thousands are already claiming their spots outside Best Buy and other [...]

With Black Friday once again hovering temptingly on the horizon, reports are coming in that many retailers are doing their very best to ‘leak’ details of their upcoming offers onto the web for the delectation of the public. So far, notable examples include Best Buy who are set to be selling a 42 inch Sharp [...]

The highly anticipated Toshiba Thrive has at long last been given an official release date for the US market, although such news has come via the Best Buy retail chain, rather than the manufacturer itself. Best Buy confirmed this Thursday that the new 10.1 inch tablet featuring the Google Android 3.1 Honeycomb OS will hit [...]

We could be looking at the end of RadioShack , boys and girls. The company is said to be exploring a strategic partnership, or outright sale, possibly to Best Buy. I don’t see why Best Buy would be interested: what does RadioShack sell that’s either A) not already available or B) entirely too niche for its Wal-Mart approach to selling consumer electronics? JPMorgan Chase is supposedly in charge of figuring out how to handle the merger or sale or whatever it ends up being. The only reason why Best Buy might be interested is because of RadioShack’s success in the cellphone business. I guess RadioShack does a fairly OK job of selling phones and accessories and whatnot, and its small stores could play into Best Buy’s “we need more, smaller stores in malls, people!” modus operandi. Or, and this is a twist, perhaps rather than selling to Best Buy (or someone else), perhaps RadioShack could use some of the money it has on hand—$900 million—to gobble up some other store! Now that would be unexpected. I’m trying to think the last time I bought something from RadioShack… it might have been solder for when I hacked my Xbox1 in 2003. So yeah, it’s been a little while. The store always seemed sorta dingy to me, like the lighting was messed up. Wiki’d

It looks like, come launch day , you’ll only be able to buy the iPad at retail from the Apple Store or from Best Buy. Who buys things from stores anymore, I wonder. But despite the inconceivable amount of hype accompanying the iPad, Best Buy cannot be bothered to open early . Sorry, mate. Best Buy will have several SKUs available in its stores on launch day (all except the 3G one, of course, which comes out a few weeks later), but don’t think you’ll be able to stroll on in come 6am. Best Buy, owing to its de-facto monopoly on retail iPad availability—plenty of small towns have a Best Buy, but how many have an Apple Store?—won’t be opening up early to sell Apple’s latest toy. Nope: you’re going to have to wait till normal business hours to pick one up. Most stores will have iPads in stock at launch, with 675 (out of more than 1,000) stores reporting that they’ll be ready and waiting come April 3.

Here’s a candidate for the Canadian parent of the year award. Police in Richmond B.C. are looking for a couple that used their kids to load up on over $3000 worth of Blu-ray and DVD discs from Future Shop. The estimate is that the couple took between 80 to 100 movies. The parents took the children into the store, and then allowed them to walk around picking the movies that the wanted to watch, and then loaded them into the stroller. The couple then left the store without paying for the merchandise. Of course in the US, they would have been harassed and then let go, only to find that all the cases were filled with rocks. Police are currently looking for help in identifying the couple and the children.

Viliv makes some hot, little portables. That’s a fact. The X70 and S5 touchscreen along with the S7 convertible netboo k are among the best in their respective niche markets. But previously the products were only available from online retailers, which of course limits their visibility from a whole segment of potential customers. Starting Monday though, Best Buy shoppers will be able to pick up the products in store and online. There will even be an instant rebate available on the none-3G modem-equipped models. The $579 S7 will be available with a $50 instant rebate if the buyer signs up for a Sprint Mi-Fi or Overdrive hotspot. That’s of course a nice offer, but the slightly more expensive $649 S7 features a built-in unlocked 3G modem allowing owners to pop-in any ol’ activated SIM card for mobile hotspot-free Internet connectivity. As of writing it doesn’t seem that any Best Buy locations have the portables in stock, but YMMV. Give your local store a quick minute or two before bothering computer associates about when they will be getting their first Viliv shipments. [ Best Buy ]
