The three-wood shot around the trees of the 16th hole at Firestone required him to go at it hard and cut back his swing to produce a sharp fade, with the momentum carrying his body forward in an awkward step. Of course, Tiger made light of the shot and said he felt no problem with it.

Despite a couple of hiccups, he still managed three birdies and an impressive 30 foot putt on the 16th, sending a strong statement that his leg may indeed be back to the health he believed it to be at.

Woods said he felt great and that he was of course, as anybody else who has ever been away injured would be, a little nervous to see exactly what would happen. His practice sessions went by smoothly and he therefore saw no reason why he should be worried – therefore gave it both barrels.

His two under par final score was far from a talking point, even if it had marked his lowest opening round of the year so far. The conditions were such that 50% of the 78 players broke par, which is a record for any round in the 12 year history of the Championship at Firestone.

The Indianapolis Colts have added Peyton Manning the star Quarterback to their ranks, by way of a new long term contract that begins ahead of the new 2011 NFL season. As the only ever player to have won the league’s MVP award, Manning will reportedly earn an estimated $90 million over the next five years under the new contract.

It had become widely expected already that the 35 year old superstar would indeed become the highest paid player in the sport, surpassing Tom Brady’s enormous deal signed with the Patriots last September. However, it has been suggested that Manning was keen to see some of the money put up used for additional signings and therefore agreed on a deal which roughly matches that of Brady, at around $18 million per year.

Before the contract had even been signed, the Colts had placed a franchise tag on the player so as to reduce the chances of him hitting the free-agency market.

However, there are still a number of concerns regarding Manning’s overall fitness levels, as he is expected not to report to training camp on schedule following surgery regarding a neck injury. The Colts are to list Manning on the physically unable to perform list, which means he will remain absent until he is removed.

Manning has so far not missed a single game in his NFL career of 13 years, which adds up to a staggering 227 starts.

On last Sunday’s first play, Favre sprained his throwing shoulder so badly he had to be removed from the game immediately.

The Vikings have found new life since Brad Childress was let go earlier in the season and replaced with interim coach Leslie Frazier. Favre said he’ll take his team’s best interests to hear when he decides whether he wants to start this week.

Favre said he would ask himself, “Can you be effective if you play?” He indicated that if he thinks he can be effective, he “would love to play and see this through,” referring to his record of consecutive starts.

Frazier, for his part, says that Favre will start if he is healthy and wants to. “Hopefully that will be the case,” Frazier said.

Kroger, a nationwide grocery store chain based in Cincinnati, announced that it is removing every box of Chad Ochocinco’s cereal from its shelves due to a misprint in which a phone sex hotline appears on those boxes.

The box is supposed to carry a number for a charity called “Feed the Children,” which Ochocinco supports.

But part of the number was printed incorrectly, and the resulting number is a paid sex line. Callers who dialed it were invited to enter the credit card information to pay for the call.

True to form, Ochocinco tweeted about the incident, apologizing to fans and cereal-eaters. He said he was “bummed about the cereal number mixup,” and that he was “trying to do good” when he put the number on the box in the first place.

There was no word on when the cereal might reappear on store shelves with a corrected phone number.

They beat Washington on Saturday in a 5-4 shootout, with Brian Boucher’s 33 saves contributing to his first win after a rough opening to the season.

“It’s just nice to win,” Boucher said.

The only goal in the shootout came from Danny Briere. Claude Giroux, Andreas Nodl, Jeff Carter, and Mike Richards contributed goals in regulation.

“It’s one thing to beat the lower-seed teams,” Briere said. “But we have to start showing we belong amongst the best.”

It seemed to be a game of highlights for the Gators after something of a slow start. Florida had 480 yards of offense, and the defense had 4 sacks and forced three turnovers. Even 312-pound defensive tackle Terron Sanders returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Perhaps the biggest show of the night came from the Gators’ wide receiver Chris Rainey, who blocked two punts and added a 40-yard touchdown reception from John Brantley.

After a three-game losing streak that ended a week ago with a last-second win over Georgia, Florida (6-3, 4-3) is now ready to play South Carolina next weekend to find out which of the two teams will win the SEC East.

Vanderbilt (2-7, 1-5) lost its fourth game in a row, and struggled in a game that was riddled with injuries. Running back Warren Norman was already out for the season with a wrist injury, and Zac Stacy, who started in his place, had to be stretchered off the field in the second quarter after suffering a concussion and being knocked unconscious. Wesley Tate then had to leave before halftime with an ankle injury.

A Gator offense that has been in flux recently after an anemic start to the season saw further changes today. Freshman phenom Trey Burton saw a little less action at quarterback today, while Jordan Reed played almost the entire second half. The Gators now have three quarterbacks that they rotate for different purposes, and so far the change seems to be for the best.

One previously missing element in the Gators’ lineup has been Chris Rainey, who played in his second game back after a five-game suspension for sending a threatening text message to his girlfriend.

Favre has started in 292 consecutive games, the longest such streak in the history of the NFL.

His start this past Sunday was a surprise to some, given the two fractures in his left foot from last Sunday’s game. But commentators and fans noted that Favre seemed to be playing well on the injured foot.

Yesterday’s injury is being described as a chin laceration requiring stitches, but some commentators and fans observed that the injury seemed more serious at the time of its occurrence. When Favre was hit head-on by Myron Pryor’s helmet, he tried to stand up at first and then collapsed to the ground, as team doctors ran to the field to collect him. Some observers noted that Favre appeared to be concussed, though this is simply speculation and no official announcement has made mention of any consussion.

Favre’s performance during Sunday’s game was solid, but it wasn’t enough to secure his team the win.

Favre has long been a fixture of off-season NFL news, with his on-again, off-again retirement announcements and his frequent team changes. He is currently the subject of an investigation into allegedly inappropriate electronic messages sent a New York Jets hostess while Favre was a Jet.

A tackle made by a Rutgers football player has cost him the function of his body and limbs from the neck down.

During a game Saturday at the New Meadowlands Stadium, Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand aggressively tackled Army member Malcolm Brown. Mr. LeGrand appeared to duck his head while delivering the tackle, the Associated Press notes.

After the attack, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound Rutgers football player was down on the field for five minutes while the medical team treated him.

Rutgers and Army were tied at 17 when the incident occurred.

Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano told the AP last Sunday that Mr. LeGrand was then rushed to Hackensack University Medical Center’s intensive care unit where he underwent an emergency surgery to stabilize his spine. The surgery lasted one night.

The medical staff that treated Mr. LeGrand on the field was very efficient, according to Coach Schiano. The coach told the AP that he was very proud of the medical team and everyone else who helped during the incident.

When Coach Schiano visited Mr. LeGrand after his surgery, the player’s spirits were as good can be expected. The coach related to the AP that Mr. LeGrand was able to recognize him, his mother and the team members who visited him.

Mr. LeGrand will continue receiving treatment in the coming days.

For two years, Mr. LeGrand was a member of the Rutgers football team’s leadership council. According to Coach Schiano, Mr. LeGrand had a strong work ethic and was very compassionate and caring towards other football players.

8:40 A.M. — In the women’s competition, Astede Baysa and Mamitu Daska went away from Askale Magarsa as they achieved the halfway position in 1:09:45.

8:26 A.M. — The men moved through the halfway stage in 1:02:35, with all the leading pack of 8 which includes all the competitors.

In the women’s competition, Mamitu Daska of Ehtopia, Astede Baysa and Askale Magarsa were going together at the lead during the 1st 10 miles, with defending winner Liliya Shobukhova of Russia holding around 10 meters back.

7:56 A.M. — Regardless of the temperature, the top notch men’s speed started to increase significantly in the 5th mile, which they dealt with in 4 mins, 40 secs, and the 6th, in 4:39. It was predicting to a 2 hour, 4 min, 27 sec end, which would tie in with the 3rd quickest race ever.

The anticipated competitors, as well as defending champ Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya and 4 Ethiopians, all were in the 9 men going at the lead after 6 miles.

The women’s marathon spread out earlier, with a pair of 4 going into the lead.

With minimal clouds and bit of shade, the quick early speed was less likely to proceed.

7:36 A.M. — Heat sparkled in the lower 60s as the 1st runners dropped out onto Columbus Drive at the north end of Grant Park at the beginning of the 2010 Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

For the 3rd time in 4 years, the marathon started in unseasonably hot temperature.

The prediction for today is for temperature to increase in the mid-80s, the most warm temperature for the race since 2007, when temperature got to just about 90 degrees with high moisture and the path was shut after 3½ hours to individuals who hadn’t got to the halfway point.
