Black Swan, will it fulfill expectations

Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan,” will be releasing shortly, but has been generating a lot off hype even before its release. The trailer starts off as a happy go lucky thing but after the first minute it gets astonishing. At the end the viewer is left wanting more of the awesomeness, with his appetite not yet whetted.

The trailer is pretty similar to that of Paranormal Activity, with it generating the same amount of suspense and thrill. But Paranormal activity pretty much bombed at the box office after the few opening days ,as the word started to spread of the movie not being up-to par with its trailer and not supplying enough of the thrills and suspense as promised. Most people didn’t even buy the DVD of the movie.Sometimes the best parts of a movie are patched together into a trailer, and the movie as a whole isn’t that interesting.

And so “Black Swan” will have to live up-to the hype it has created via its trailer, as the viewers are expecting something out of the ordinary and special. It might even bomb at the box office if it doesn’t live up to its expectations. But to be successful it must generate enough ticket sales whilst it is being shown in theaters and when the DVD comes out it too must sell.

The trailer has generated as much hype as the film makers wanted, but the actual film must fulfill the expectations of the viewers and then some if it is to be branded as a “successful” movie.

Brigitte Bardot has shown her displeasure

When someone decides to make movies on your life, you may feel pretty upbeat about it, and would eagerly look forward to the completion of the movie. No matter, how big or small a celebrity you could be, but not Brigitte Bardot.

The veteran Hollywood actress, Brigitte Bardot who had given innumerable hits during her prime is totally uncomfortable with the idea of someone making a movie on her life.

Bardot has shown her displeasure when she came to know that director Kyle Newman had decided to make a movie on her life, and that too, without her consent, which has probably annoyed her more.

Brigitte Bardot, who is 75 now, has told that it is unfair to make a movie on someone’s life, when the person is still alive.

She has also added that ‘sparks may fly’ if anyone dares to make a movie on her life.

Brigitte Bardot, who skipped acting some 37 years ago, has been planning to begin a project, the title of which involves her name.

Brigitte Bardot during her prime

It remains to be seen if she manages to do it.

Director Kyle Newman who had thought of casting her wife, Jaime King, as Brigitte Bardot in a movie would find it extremely difficult to convince Brigitte Bardot, considering that she is bent on taking action against the movie maker on her life.

Disney decides to sell Miramax

Disney has finally decided that it would part its association with Miramax. After much speculation, Disney sold off Miramax for $660 million. Analysts have figured out that Miramax off beat movies did not comply with the expectation of Disney owners.

It was the end of a long partnership. It all started when Disney took Miramax under its fold in the year 1993, and it all went smooth for many years.

The association of Disney with Miramax yielded more than 700 films, which speaks of a fruitful relationship between the two.

The decision by Disney to sell off Miramax was mainly attributed to Miramax’s inability to churn out commercial hits. Though, the studio has made some of the best art films, but Disney felt otherwise, and the firm finally sold off Miramax to investment firm Colony Capital LLC and construction Tycoon, Ron Tutor.

Though, there were few prominent personalities who were gunning to buy Miramax. One of the potential buyers who was shown the door was Weinstein Brothers, the one who founded Miramax studio.

According to a statement released by the new buyers, the firm would put more emphasis on the library section of Miramax, and there won’t be any production projects in the near future.

The sale of Miramax by Disney had resulted in a negative trend in the share prices of Disney. The shares fell down slightly as the news broke out that Disney had gone forward with the deal.

It is expected that the amount received by Disney would be put to channelize growth in Disney’s other projects.

The Karate Kid Movie Review

Some many remakes saw their transitory glory destroyed by criticisms and the nostalgic film enthusiasts, so much of adaptations knew the failure through modernity, so much as works from the past were described as fallacious ones (we only have to think about Disturbia from D.J. Caruso or King Kong from Peter Jackson), that to produce new a Karate Kid could very well have depreciated the traditional one and the victorious memory which resulted from this. But extremely fortunately, this risk was worth the sorrow to be taken. Even if Jackie Chan hardly manages to make forget the imposing presence and the myth behind Pat Morita, Jaden Smith makes much better a Karate Kid than Ralph Macchio would never have been able the being.
Because of the work of his mother, Dre Parker is forced to move in China. The young 12 year old boy is sad to have to leave all his friends, all his reference marks, for a country which he hardly knows. Whereas he tries to be integrated into his new environment, he meets Meiying, a young Chinese person who dreams to become a large musician. But, although their friendship seems easy and natural, other young people of the school, specialists in Kung fu, refuse that they are attended and do not hesitate to use violence to make themselves comprehensible to him. Dre will thus try to learn this martial art with the assistance of Mr. Han, the caretaker of his building.
The son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jaden Smith, is really qualified. Whereas Ralph Macchio in the original version made only some martial figures and more gained the final combat thanks to the chance that by talent, Smith does not cease impressing by his lifting performances like by his authentic play. Jackie Chan, on the contrary, seems distant, less committed; his tricks are limited and his interpretation, rather banal.
Although we are all conscious that China undergoes important conflicts at the moment and that the climate which reigns there in is more one of uncertainty that of prosperity, nobody can deny his spiritual beauty and the richness of his history. The film reveals us a chimerical place, utopian perhaps (only one negative word on China, and the Americans would have been banished, without image nor possibility of return), but indisputably splendid, idyllic. The images in mountain, on the great wall, in the moved back suburbs, agree perfectly with the creed of Karate Kid (we even wonder a certain moment how the story could function in Los Angeles).
The starting elements of the new story and from the old movie are appreciably the same ones: young American wants to learn martial arts to be able to defend themselves and turns to the Chinese caretaker of his building, which seems to know the kung fu, to help him. Several modifications were made all the same to the tale; some were worth the effort of it – migration of the history in China, the more rigorous training of the teenager -, then of others do nothing but harm the adaptation. The development of the character of Meiying, too many stages in Dre’s formation -, unnecessarily lengthening the account (a film of 2:20 which is for all the family, it is generally too long).
The new version of Karate Kid will, in a general way, fill waitings, inter alia by the quality of its plans and its performances. A new generation of young people will want surely to learn martial arts and to perhaps even visit China, to know its culture. Remain to see on the other hand if the nostalgic ones will be able to pass beyond the absence of Mr. Miyagi.

The A-Team Movie Review

The A-Team, in spite of its solid distribution and its interesting premises, proves to be a very long introduction to a story without much scale nor originality. Coincidences and the unjustified miracles of the destiny thread like pretext with scenes of engagements with special effects, which often, suffer from an obvious lack of sat within the narration. The realization of Joe Carnahan is also failing, being often connected with the style of Eleven Ocean, but without its effectiveness and its intelligence.
When they are victims of a mutiny in Iraq, special agents of the American army are shown of treason and are locked up in various federal penitentiaries throughout the world. When the CIA offers the chance to them to bleach their reputation and to make shine the truth, the four soldiers, directed by Hannibal, escape from prison and embark in a frantic mission to try to find an invaluable object for the United States. They will discover in the middle of this adventure that they can trust nobody, especially to those which they believe their allies, when it is question of money and notoriety.
Adapted from a televised series of the Eighties, the feature-length film appears to us too much very quickly as an immense foreword with a story which we heard of thousands of times at the cinema (these heroes which are devoted only to the right causes and which have a rather nebulous past, ambivalent). What could have been to us explained in a few seconds in credits rate with the whole beginning of film is developed to us longitudinally and into broad during nearly two hours. The antecedents of these “agents of peace” are not other than a subterfuge to show us good number of explosions and methodically choreographed stunts.
The actors (physically very similar to the original characters) probably make of their better to prevent the catastrophe, giving a sizeable performance in spite of the aberration of the counterparts that puts to them in mouth. But they do not manage unfortunately to save the crew. The director from Smokin’ Aces hardly reveals us his talents other than that of executor that we know already. These action scenes – which are all the same, it should be admitted – leave little place to the text, with the development of the protagonists, the assessments inherent in the movie. The spectator then well is lost too early, disconcerted, in this accumulation of deaths and bullets.
The story could perhaps have been saved inconsistency if contradictions and coincidences did not follow one another in a manner also absurd. Why is it necessary that the goods never eliminate the malicious ones as they have the chance to do it? When do we find the time to go and shave in full fatal brawl? And who decided that the beautiful guy and the beautiful girl were impeccably to develop feelings in love in spite of their remote resentment? These are the banal, but redundant things, which withdraw with the feature-length film credibility necessary to its (as negligible as it is) success.
Beyond the special effects and perhaps of this nostalgic aspect which will gather most enthusiastic, the feature-length film does not have many unsuspected attributes. Perhaps would it be necessary in this case to think of the plan B before choosing The A-Team to divert ourselves.

MOVIE REVIEW – Letters to Juliet

It is not by multiplying the love stories that a film becomes necessarily better. Letters to Juliet in vain presents a horde of individuals in love under the postcard sun of Italy, the production does not remain about it less afflicting with banality and superficiality.
Tempting American (played by Amanda Seyfried) of passage in Italy in company of her promised in marriage (played by Gael Garcia Bernal) who forsakes her completely discovers an old love letter going back to a half-century. In addition to answering this forgotten message, the young woman decides to help her addressee (played by Vanessa Redgrave) to find her old flame. The mission will not be obvious, especially that there is the grandson (played by Chris Egan) in trimmings which does not release from positive wave.
For the moment, 2010 is the year of lovesong. For one or two tales which functions completely (My Dear Enemy), the feature-length films end however up being followed and resembling (Valentine’s Day, “She’s Out of My League, Leap Year, etc), hardly astonishing in their tepid dashes by the heart. “Letters to Juliet” unfortunately makes party of this last category. That where the surprises are rare, where the whole is guessed with the simple reading of the synopsis and where the destiny defies any logic, triumphing over the adversity. Like so by crossing the fingers and while hoping, the future will be better. What good is it to make efforts in this case?
The reason, it will have to be held far from this object smoothes and without attraction which resembles curiously that which are released in the rooms almost every week. How would somebody normally made up think of working rather than to spend good moments with Amanda Seyfried? Why this heroin, whose trade is to make research to check her information sources, does not have the presence of mind to use her telephone instead of losing her days on the road by visiting all the Romeo potentials? And why doesn’t that arrive the every day only two beings which spend their time hating themselves finish really together?
Apart from these aberrant considerations which handicap heavily the scenario are other such regrettable choices. In the same way the annoying When in Rome, the local population resembles traveling stereotypes which only critic everything and eat spaghetti. The elementary realization of Gary Winick collapses under an orgy of violins, whereas the not very elaborate characters remain antipathetic. Between the insipid Chris Egan and the irritating Gael Garcia Bernal which multiplies mimicry not to be finished more, Amanda Seyfried should take her legs with her blow and blame her agent. As much she can be convincing by incarnating turbid figures (Chloe, Jennifer’s Body), as much it completely misses conviction in the tests with a little romance, like this one and the useless Dear John. Only Vanessa Redgrave, who seems to play in feature-length film completely different (by surprising that her story is much more interesting), takes a certain pleasure to be where she is.
So at least from the desire and passion came out from these extravagant adventures. The least breath of life – or humor – which would have been beneficial, only to give a reason to bring our mother (or our grandmother) in a air-conditioned room. Instead of that, better is worth to off arise small traditional everlasting like The Bridges of Madison County, or better still, to even turn over to the essence and to rediscover the essence of Shakespeare.

MOVIE REVIEW – Tales from the Golden Age

After having put the Rumanian cinema on the chart thanks to his superb 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days which enabled him to put the hand on a very deserved Gold Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, Christian Mungiu invites scenario writers of his country to put in images some urban legends. In results Tales From the Golden Age, a series of sketches as funny as intelligent on the life under Ceausescu.
The idea does not fail to allure. Some directors known or not decide to gather to make revive an important period of their history. The concept is not new and it is especially applied to places (New York, Paris, Montreal, Tokyo), but with generally unequal and, ultimately, anecdotic results. It is not the case of this feature film in five times conceived by Christian Mungiu, Hanno Höffer, Ioana Uricaru, Ràzvan Märculescu and Constantin Popescu.
As its title indicates it, in fact the tales are with the honor, this way of telling a story which addresses to all the layers of the population. Extremely conclusive legends of the 80s under the dictatorship of Ceausescu, whose reign ended abruptly with the power – and handling – of television. Already in The Legend of the Official Visit, the inhabitants of a small town do all so that their village appears well with the eyes of the higher authorities. Not surprising that the worship of the image and appearances take as much importance. On a nice and burlesque tone, the story line develops fine and attaching characters who live extraordinarily normal situations. The satire takes a little thickness in The Legend of the Party Photographer when the critics oblige a propaganda sheet to modify a photograph of their Head of State so that he appears as large as that of the other nations! Even if a microphone disappears a little too tardily from a plan, the unit is followed with great interest, with an enormous smile on the lips.
The seriousness takes the top of The Legend of the Chicken Driver, probably the longest segment, which points out “inoffensive” corruption under the Communist regime and the always present need for obeying orders even if they seem eccentric. All that via an honest man who is brought to the crime with causes of the impulses that he feels towards a tempting woman. Still there, the irony takes the step on aspects much more moralizers, with an omniscient glance which never judges the hearts. That does not prevent from describing with meticulousness and a little cynicism the inventory of fixtures, in particular during The Legend of the Greedy Policeman, where a family seeks the best means of killing a pig without awaking the neighbors. The intelligence of the matter and the step eclipse these stereotypes which end all the same up appearing here and there. The icing on the cake remains with The Legend of the Air Sellers, a formidable allegory on capitalism under bottom of “Bonnie & Clyde”, with two individuals who seek to grow rich while benefitting from the naivety from their entourage. Without idle period nor superfluous moment, this absolutely brilliant final comes to close quite beautiful one of the best successions of short films to be distributed in rooms these last years.
For better seizing Romania and making a flying visit in time without never breaking with nostalgic and realistic fibers where politics, economics and the glance on the human one make good household, there is nothing better in this moment that these Tales from the Golden Age

MOVIE REVIEW – Robin Hood

For their fifth joint participation, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe reinterpret the myth of Robin Hood by insufflating a new destiny to him. So only it was sufficient with this spectacular meaningless production which replaces passion and humanity by a too full content with special battles and effects.
At the end from the 12th century, England and France hate themselves, developing machinations to invade themselves mutually. Robin (played by Russel Crowe) has enough on the fights, he seeks an only little quietude, perhaps even in the arms of Lady Marianne (played by Cate Blanchett). But the malicious Godfrey (played by Mark Strong) decides some differently when he decides to control Nottingham and its inhabitants. To defend them, a man who controls the arc and arrows – as his community – decide to take the weapons.
We do not finish any more to rediscover this legend of the Middle Ages. On the strict cinematographic level, after the very succeeded versions of 1922 and 1938, and the televised series which starred Richard Greene, all were known as on this enjolor outlaw who lives in the forest of Sherwood. That did not prevent feature-length films from periodically being born. After rout of his unequal Kingdom of Heave (at least the version presented in rooms, not that lengthened which is found on DVDs), Ridley Scott revisits this time with such a forgettable result, returning this time at the source (large fashion) of (super) hero, exploring his particular course and the relation with his father assassinated by a cheating character.
An pass key intrigue which takes its rise with difficulty so much the scenario is badly developed, quickly flying over the characters and the places, seeking with all to say without never explaining the major motivations. That gives a first part which is far from being enthralling, the film enthusiast being sometimes more attentive to raise the historical errors than to follow the routs of not very charismatic beings. The whole is replaced fortunately thereafter when Robin and Marianne are together in joint scenes. The Australian duet functions with wonder and for rare once, the scenario writer somewhat releases his serious, allowing one or two funnier scenes, lighter.
His bad habits return quickly to the gallop. Nonsatisfied to finally have sat his cherished couple, he feels obliged to offer new combat violent one, muscular confrontations and very aggressive speeches. In the passing, it is impossible not to think of the superiors Braveheart, and even Gladiator which sometimes happened to put full the sight of it. Until the final confrontation, more ridiculous than convincing, which makes laugh involuntarily, with this idle on the face of Crowe and his superhuman efforts to help the being of his heart.
Very convincing technician but with the personality now doubtful, the director of Blade Runner (what it can be far this time blessed by gods) can be however well surrounded. Everyone is ready to turn with him, which equips his works with fantastic distributions, as it is also the case here, with the presence of Max von Sydow, William Hurt, Mark Strong (in very villlain, as usual) and of Lea Seydoux. Beautiful names which are not always able to be put forward so much the characters are drawn with the large soft lead pencil, with these French from the Hell who only seek to plunder and to violate.
In front of this Robin Hood of year 0, the spectator will be able to even regret the extremely honey version of Kevin Reynolds where Kevin Costner and Bryan Adams competed to dissolve the heart of the women. How can it be different with a tale schematized with possible, stagnating under a horde of melodies, interchangeable combat and surface current stakes (these people without money evokes the spectrum of the economic crisis)? Another product without heart which enormously has difficulty to allure and to divert. The roof for something which was built only for this purpose.

MOVIE REVIEW – Mother and Child

Mixing in a soporific way three stories where the adoption plays a paramount role between the mothers and their daughters, Mother and Child seems to last four hours in its way of doing meet superficially and in a pretentious way a multitude of characters.
Three women will see their way crossing in the joy and the pain. Karen (played by Annette Bening) gave her child in adoption and she has more and more difficulty in tie bonds with her entourage. Her daughter that she forever considering, Elizabeth (played by Naomi Watts), resembles to her, changing city not to think about her past. For her part, Lucy (played by Kerry Washington) would like to adopt, and an occasion is offered finally to her…
Son of the popular Gabriel Garcia Marquez writer, Rodrigo Garcia has touched the realization for several years. His best films (Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her and Nine Lives) have all joint to present several stories which put in scene a multitude of women. After a forgettable turning towards suspense with “Passengers”, here he is back to his topics of predilection, Mother and Child, of which he also ensures the scenario, while asking his good friend Alejandro González Iñárritu to act as an executive producer, which can be always useful to open closed doors and inaccessible.
Her new feature film is strewn with the most beautiful possible intentions. Which are the bonds between a woman and her child? How to fill this vacuum which is drawn up? What is really a mother? How to make to catch up with wasted time? A horde of universal and timeless questions which seem without end. With the image of the story line, moreover. Even if it lasts only 126 minutes, the production spreads out during at least forty five minutes, recalling and underlining what was already known as previously, ardently seeking to tap the least emotion.
Profiting from a setting in studied scene but ultimately empty and too invaluable, which puts on the account of the chance of the life several annoying improbabilities, this heavy object handicapped by a sound screen a little too invading does not have the happier hand in its way to concocter its characters. The feminine roles multiply as rabbits (all these mothers which seem almost magic, the teenager blind woman, etc), with beings which do not have sometimes any other function but to bring a message moralizer. All hardly goes better within the three principal destinies. Kerry Washington in vain multiplies the smiles and lets sail her natural charisma, her Lucy misses the consistent one, developing that too tardily. It is still worse on the side of the antipathetic Karen that defends Annette Bening mechanically. Only Naomi Watts makes accept the distress of her being, and the scenes which she defends with Samuel L. Jackson are among most interesting and touching batch. Still there, the vision of Garcia lacks nuance, reducing the man to a simple spectator who is more often than differently far away from balance family.
Prefabricated work on creditable sets of themes, Mother and Child is in fact heavy and repetitive mix which wants to make well but which does much too much of it. All the opposite of the significant and minor Casa de los babys of John Sayles which tackled with much more know-how a similar subject.
