What Can I Do If I Jailbreak My IPhone?
Tech Tuesday, October 5th, 2010So you bought an iphone and now what ? If you find you are not satisfied with what the iTunes store has to offer, you have choices. You can jailbreak the iPhone and explore a new world where you have control, instead of Apple. Read on to find out some of the cool things you can do with a jailbroken iPhone.
After you already have your iphone, you will want to do some the popular things that others are doing. The first is to add support for various bluetooth connections. How would you like to hook up a another headset or a keyboard to your iphone ? It is possible if it is jailbroken. Be sure to jailbreak your iphone with Cydia to get this function. You will be able to hook up a mouse, add other GPS devices and transfer files using bluetooth.
Since you now have control over the iphone you can access the file system. This is important for any digital device, including a smartphone. Again, make sure to use Cydia for this. You will be able to get in to the file system using Cydia and FTP ( File Transfer Protocol ). If you are good with code, you can enter it directly through command line in the operating system.
If you despise the simple time and date default lock screen, you can now change it. After you have control over the iphone, you can install a program called BiteSMS. This will allow you to view unread text messages on a locked screen. Not only that, it includes a status bar showing the total number of unread messages. Another nice locked screen wallpaper is from “Element”. This is not available yet for iOS 4. If you have an earlier version iphone you can get the weather, missed calls and other information on the locked screen.
AT&T enforces some strict rules. One of which is usage restrictions on already limited connections. You do not have to put up with such nonsense with your jailbroken iphone. Use your newfound liberty to use the 3G connection the way you want. One such restricted feature is the Apple face time program. The program to get for your jailbroken iphone 4 is called “My3G” to be able to use face time over a 3G network. If you remember, it only works over Wi-Fi on a stock iphone 4.
Forget using a cable to synchronize your newly jailbroken iphone. It is no longer needed. Wi-Fi can now be used and it might even be faster if you have Wi-Fi “N”. This is a another Cydia application and has an uneventful name; “Wi-Fi Sync”. Just install the matching app on your computer, pair it up, and you are ready. Crank up the iTunes program and the Wi-Fi Sync app on the jailbroken iphone. Done ! It is no more complicated than that.
There are plenty of other things you can do with a jailbroken iphone. These are just a few. We did not get into tethering, customizing the user interface and other things. Rest assured that you can take full control of your iphone by jailbreaking it and being careful not to let it get caught back into the Apple web.
