MOVIE REVIEW – Letters to Juliet
Entertainment Friday, June 4th, 2010It is not by multiplying the love stories that a film becomes necessarily better. Letters to Juliet in vain presents a horde of individuals in love under the postcard sun of Italy, the production does not remain about it less afflicting with banality and superficiality.
Tempting American (played by Amanda Seyfried) of passage in Italy in company of her promised in marriage (played by Gael Garcia Bernal) who forsakes her completely discovers an old love letter going back to a half-century. In addition to answering this forgotten message, the young woman decides to help her addressee (played by Vanessa Redgrave) to find her old flame. The mission will not be obvious, especially that there is the grandson (played by Chris Egan) in trimmings which does not release from positive wave.
For the moment, 2010 is the year of lovesong. For one or two tales which functions completely (My Dear Enemy), the feature-length films end however up being followed and resembling (Valentine’s Day, “She’s Out of My League, Leap Year, etc), hardly astonishing in their tepid dashes by the heart. “Letters to Juliet” unfortunately makes party of this last category. That where the surprises are rare, where the whole is guessed with the simple reading of the synopsis and where the destiny defies any logic, triumphing over the adversity. Like so by crossing the fingers and while hoping, the future will be better. What good is it to make efforts in this case?
The reason, it will have to be held far from this object smoothes and without attraction which resembles curiously that which are released in the rooms almost every week. How would somebody normally made up think of working rather than to spend good moments with Amanda Seyfried? Why this heroin, whose trade is to make research to check her information sources, does not have the presence of mind to use her telephone instead of losing her days on the road by visiting all the Romeo potentials? And why doesn’t that arrive the every day only two beings which spend their time hating themselves finish really together?
Apart from these aberrant considerations which handicap heavily the scenario are other such regrettable choices. In the same way the annoying When in Rome, the local population resembles traveling stereotypes which only critic everything and eat spaghetti. The elementary realization of Gary Winick collapses under an orgy of violins, whereas the not very elaborate characters remain antipathetic. Between the insipid Chris Egan and the irritating Gael Garcia Bernal which multiplies mimicry not to be finished more, Amanda Seyfried should take her legs with her blow and blame her agent. As much she can be convincing by incarnating turbid figures (Chloe, Jennifer’s Body), as much it completely misses conviction in the tests with a little romance, like this one and the useless Dear John. Only Vanessa Redgrave, who seems to play in feature-length film completely different (by surprising that her story is much more interesting), takes a certain pleasure to be where she is.
So at least from the desire and passion came out from these extravagant adventures. The least breath of life – or humor – which would have been beneficial, only to give a reason to bring our mother (or our grandmother) in a air-conditioned room. Instead of that, better is worth to off arise small traditional everlasting like The Bridges of Madison County, or better still, to even turn over to the essence and to rediscover the essence of Shakespeare.
